What does 2018 mean for you?

After a very traumatic year in 2012, I began to get apprehensive with the approach of a new year. What does a new year hold? Yes, a new year brings with it a fresh start, new opportunities, a chance to begin again and start over. It also brings with it 365 days of unknown occurrences. Looking into that big unknown of a future can at times leave us a bit anxious. What will 2018 bring?

Since we can’t tell the future (unfortunately), we try to prepare for the year and direct it as best as we can with prayers, goals and new year resolutions:

  • Become a more serious student
  • Stop drinking
  • Read my bible more diligently
  • Start saving towards the future

There is nothing wrong with making these common New Year’s resolutions. Of course, all of us make resolutions that we fail to keep.

But the truth is all our resolving and goal setting is in vain if we don’t begin with this most important goal/ Resolution:

  • DEVELOPING A CLOSER RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD: If you are not a Christian, you might be tempted now to leave the page but just hold. What if the bible is true ( which it is) and God is the only one who knows the future? Will you rather walk through 2018 groping through the dark or you will prefer to be led by the one person who knows what the year holds? Will you prefer to spend the year falling over and over, making resolutions you cannot make and making one bad choice after the other or you will rather spend it getting to know the one who created you, who loves you and who can guide you on the best pathway for your life?

Psalm 32: 8: ‘The LORD says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.’

I don’t know what 2018 holds or what challenges may arise in my life but you know what, I spent New year’s eve in thanksgiving and worship because I am so confident in the God who is going to lead me in 2018.

People may leave me in 2018, governments may fail, some of my plans may go awry and many other things may happen but I know for sure that God will still be God, He will still be my God, He will still guide me on the best pathway for my life and open the right doors for me. He will protect me and keep me from evil and even if the worst should happen and my life should end in 2018, I know exactly where I am going- to the heavenly home of my heavenly father.

So looking forward to the great unknown of a New year, what is your anchor and where is your confidence. It cannot be in yourself and in your plans because those are as unstable as they come. It cannot be on friends and family who are equally mortal. Let your hope be in God, who alone is immortal, unchanging and always Good. Start 2018 with this one resolution, to know God and to know Him intimately.
