A Place of Encounter

There’s a place of life-transforming encounters and that is the place of prayer. Dear friend,  there’s a need for you and me to pray.  Every religion in the world recognizes the importance of prayer even though most of these prayers are not offered to God Himself. As Christians, we have access to God Himself through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross.

‘Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.’ Hebrews 4: 16

Note the use of the word ‘confidence’. We in the body of Christ are privileged to have absolute rights to come into the Holy presence of God. We can come boldly and confidently because we have been given the right to do so. So let us take advantage of this opportunity to meet with God and spend time with Him in the place of prayer. It’s about time we begin to see prayer as much more than a *religious duty* to endure…let’s see prayer as a _*place of Encounter*_ _(but not just a way to receive a blessing) but also a way :

It is in the place of prayer and Bible meditation that God will make known Himself and His ways. If you want to know God, have an encounter with Him and grow in your relationship with Him, then you need to pray. Remember that your relationship with God, like every other relationship, thrives on communication and that communication is prayer.

As humans, it is difficult for us to walk in love as Christ desires. Our natural human tendencies often lead us to selfishness and uncaring acts. The only way we can continuously walk in love is by being continuously in prayer. Romans 5: 5 ‘Because God’s love has been abundantly poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.’ When we spend more time to pray, we learn to love as Christ loves and we learn to love people as Christ loves them. For prayer positions us to be energized to LOVE; not the worldly kind of love but the Heavenly kind of LOVE!

As believers, we long to live a more holy and Christ-like life. I don’t know about you but I have discovered that this doesn’t come easy. Prayer is one of the means by which we are strengthened to overcome temptation and be more Christ-like. Jesus Christ Himself cautioned us, ‘Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.’ Mathew 26: 41. Dear friends, your flesh is weak and by itself, it cannot forgive, overcome fornication and other temptations but as you spend more time with God in prayer, He strengthens you to overcome temptation and become more Christlike. Are you struggling with any particular sin at the moment, why not talk to God about it?

Remember that there is no substitute for prayer in the life of a believer. It is good to engage in acts of service, ministry activities, mission trips, offerings and more. But none of these can replace the need for you to spend time alone with God in prayer. As a child of God, this is the place where God talks to you one on one and shows you deeper things-       ‘Call to me and I will answer you and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.’ (Jeremiah 33: 3)

So you may be asking yourself, ‘Okay, I know prayer is important but how do I pray?’ One wise man said, ‘The best way to learn how to pray is by praying’. You don;t need to pray perfect prayers. You need to pray the word of God. So why not try these simple steps:

  • Set aside a few minutes tomorrow to spend time with God
  • Select a passage of scripture to read and think on
  • After reading, select the verse which speaks to you most and pray the words of that verse. Eg. Ps 1: 1 ‘Happy are those who reject the advice of evil men, who do not follow the examples of sinners.’ You can pray like this: Father thank you for your word and the admonishment it gives me today, help me to reject the advice of evil men, help my siblings, boss, friends, and parents to reject any advice of evil people. Help us not to follow the example of sinners but to follow your word in all we do. In Jesus name, I have prayed. Amen
