Patrick Walenkaki is my name.
I studied procurement at the Accra Technical University, formerly Accra Polytechnic, and had my national service between 2011 and 2012.
I did my national service at the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Tema. I did not choose Greater Accra Region as the place for my service but i suppose the National Service Secretariat have their modalities in selecting a place for a service person. Most of my mates were also posted to Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority.
I was initially assigned to the Materials Department but was later moved to work with the Security Department for reasons best known to the Management of Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority.
The service registration process during my time was cumbersome and so, though unethical, i paid my way through so it took me two days to complete the process. That saved me from the troubling registration process.
GPHA is an institution every service person dreams of rendering his or her service there because of the numerous opportunities over there. The institution takes you through several training courses prior to starting work and that equips and prepares you to get into the job market successfully.
Another good thing about GPHA is that they pay allowances on time and even add bonuses to motivate you.
My only disappointment during the service year was not being able to secure a job at GPHA. I could not secure a job because of political reasons i think. The government brought in their foot soldiers to take the available space thereby relieving the service personnel of their posts after the national service.
